Myself, I’m very much looking forward to next Friday, when Ravna should be over her kennel cough and will be getting her stitches out, and I’ll be able to take her to dog parks and enlist other dogs to help wear her down. She has a truly impressive amount of energy.

Is it the energy, the unruliness, or the schedule that’s the toughest bit for you?

Definitely don’t ever have kids if a dog is doing you in. Although my dad had a labradoodle and that dog was a piece of shit, so maybe bred dogs are just assholes.

Kids, go to the pound and adopt a pit mix. It’ll listen to you much better than any human ever will, and won’t be a piece if shit. It’ll also only cost you $50 in fees.

My backyard is filled with chickens, tortoises, dogs and kids, and the kids are the only ones I have to worry about killing themselves or others. Unfortunately, the tortoises will outlive me, the chickens and the pitbull, so I’ll have to train the humans to care for them.

- thirty-two year-old guy with a thirteen year-old pit he adopted when he was nineteen. Also has a eight and six year-old humans he created.

Mine was free, other than the heartworm treatments and shots... But the buy in was free! 100% agree.

Kinja'd!!!

You also might end up with a dog already housebroken and trained, too!

Not sleeping? I’m having difficulty where the pup just whines and barks and flips out when he’s crated, especially if he’s not near / doesn’t know where i am. I put a sweatshirt over the top of the cage to help.

Kids eventually fall asleep. The dog, I’m not so sure.

Lol join the DINKs. Me and the wife couldn’t be happier even with 3 cats.

Seriously though I’ve had good dogs and bad dogs and the good ones have always been mutts.

This reminds me of a recent episode of WTF with Marc Maron . He and his guest Amy Sedaris were discussing how neit her of them had or wanted kids. Marc said something to the effect of, "People tell me my cats are like my kids, but I don't think so. I don't have to worry about my cats getting into drugs."

I hate to say this... mainly because I’ve said nothing on this to date and I only know you via your posts...but...I am not surprised.

And as someone who has raised  two  puppies and one child ... children are easier.

Heh, in Portland even the shelter/rescue dogs are generally $250 , going up to $400 for juveniles  and up to $600 for pups. Demand for dogs here is through the woof.

Probably because if they were cheap you’d have a bunch of hipsters adopting, then returning dogs once they realized they took some work.

Yep. The second pit I adopted was three years old and already trained and socialized. Sweetest dog I’ve ever had. Listened to every command, including not to eat my chickens.

Sounds like a doggo to me

Kinja'd!!! Svend > CarsofFortLangley - Oppo Forever

Kinja'd!!!1

When they are that age they are testing everything with their mouth to see if it’ll fit and if it’s chew-able . Plenty of chew toys to keep their mouth busy as their teeth are growing in so they need to chew. The nutty side is everything is new, they are finding their place, everything is exciting so that energy needs to be steered in the right direction like somewhere to run and play.

Any telling off needs to be done there and then. If it’s a few minutes later, they won’t get it.

Saying that, that mix is a very active dog. My step-brother has a six year old one called Harry, he’s a total head case but then, my step-brother never trained him at all.

Yeah, she’s active alright. I think all three of us (wife, dog and I) are tired of being in the house. She hasn’t had her shots so we’ve been avoiding excessive walks and anywhere she could get sick.

Next week shot week, so then we will be ok after the waiting period . It will be nice to get her out to the amazing parks we have around here

Sounds like cabin fever then. Lol.

Just use the time for ground rules and getting to know each other.

She’s going to love the park and hopefully she’ll be more rested in the evening.

Our doggo used to be easier, then we had the baby and she is jealous or something. She is untraining herself, I swear.

Unfortunately we didn’t get to that point - our sweet little doggo passed away about a month after the baby was born. In that month, she was honestly pretty chill, but I could’ve seen her getting jealous eventually .

We enrolled Ozzy in training classes at PetSmart. Its one night a week for about an hour. It’s fun because my wife, Ozzy, and I all get to spend some time togeth er out of the house. There are 3 other couples in the class, all with n ew dogs, all rescues. The trainer is great, she practices stuff with each of the dogs first and then watches us practice.

I t’s a good bonding experience because we’re all learning about our dogs and sharing in frustrations. I’m secretly happy because my dog isn’t the worst - Ozzy doesn’t try to eat his own poop!

Honestly that was a concern I had about having kids with my ex . That or she’s eat  the baby so we’d pay her more attention again . But then my ex, well, became my ex so that’s not something I need to worry about for a while yet

Cayenne pepper in Vaseline will keep them from chewing whatever it’s on. And yeah, need to give them plenty of chew toys.

And a dog isn’t really a good test for the whole kid thing.... very different.  Kids kick ass, and they also kick your ass, but it’s much different than a pet.
